UK study outlines nine proposals for future Grangemouth oil refinery use | Hydrogen

UK feasibility study Project Willow has published nine options for the soon-to-close Scottish oil refinery Grangemouth’s future industrial use after evaluating more than 300 technologies. The publication of the £1.5m study – published today by global business consultancy EY in conjunction with the UK government, the Scottish government and refining and energy trading business Petroineos – follows the recent Petroineos decision to decommission the oil refinery. Industrial gases will be critical to at least half of the final proposals. These include fuel switching (replacing natural gas combustion with low carbon hydrogen), anaerobic digestion (AD, fermentation of organic waste and biogas for biomethane), e-methanol and methanol-to-jet (low-carbon hydrogen to produce methanol and convert to SAF), and e-ammonia (produced from hydrogen for shipping and chemicals). US brokers ‘energy ceasefire’ in Ukraine war | Ukraine

Ukraine’s energy sites are protected under a 30-day ceasefire Ukraine’s energy sites are protected under a 30-day ceasefire After weeks of targeted bombardment following a faltering in the Nato alliance, Russia has agreed to a 30-day ceasefire on all Ukraine energy facilities and infrastructure. In a post on the Truth Social platform, US President Donald Trump wrote, “We agreed to an immediate ceasefire on all energy [sites] and infrastructure, with an understanding that we will be working quickly to have a complete ceasefire.” The energy ceasefire naturally applies to both sides. Ukraine has been using long-range drones to attack key Russian targets. Olga Khakova, Deputy Director for European Energy Security at the Global Energy Center, said Russia has already destroyed more than half of Ukraine’s generation capacity and half of its natural gas production capabilities. Even as talks continue,… Read More »US brokers ‘energy ceasefire’ in Ukraine war | Ukraine

ABB, Charbone plan 15 North American green hydrogen sites in five years

© ABB / Charbone Hydrogen © ABB / Charbone Hydrogen ABB and Charbone Hydrogen Corporation plan to develop up to 15 green hydrogen facilities across North America over the next five years, with a first project located in Québec, Canada. Under a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the companies have agreed to connect Charbone’s inaugural plant in Sorel-Tracy to the Hydro-Québec grid as a first move. The facility, scheduled to go live by the end of Q2 2025, is intended to serve as a blueprint for future projects and will produce around 400kg of hydrogen in its first phase. A second site in the greater Detroit area has also been agreed. … to continue reading this article and more, please login, register for free, or consider subscribing to gasworld Source link

Alternative fuels ship regs not likely before 2028 ‘at earliest’ | Decarbonisation

© DNV / Fortescue Green Pioneer © DNV / Fortescue Green Pioneer New mandatory regulations for using hydrogen and ammonia fuel in ships are unlikely before 2028 at the earliest, according to a white paper by ships classification organisation DNV. It notes progress has been made with the completion of interim guidelines for hydrogen-fuelled ships planned for 2025, and formal approval and publication next year. But it anticipates another two years before regulations under the IGF Code are approved. Shipping operators are forcing the pace. While no commercial vessels are operating on ammonia, the first orders for ammonia dual-fuel engines have been signed, with delivery from this year onwards. The Fortescue Green Pioneer completed ammonia fuel trials in May last year. Ferry operator Torghatten is set to receive two 120m ferries powered by compressed hydrogen… Read More »Alternative fuels ship regs not likely before 2028 ‘at earliest’ | Decarbonisation

Air Liquide raises €500m through green bond to support energy shift | Finance

Air Liquide has raised €500m ($543.5m) by issuing a green bond to finance or refinance key energy transition projects in the low-carbon hydrogen and air gases sectors. It comes as the French industrial gas major’s third green bond after it issued two €500m raises in 2021 and 2024. The latest raise was said to be “oversubscribed” by investors and was undertaken through the firm’s Euro Medium Term Note (EMTN) programme. The bond has a 10-year maturity at a yield of 3.570% per year. … to continue reading this article and more, please login, register for free, or consider subscribing to gasworld Source link

The European Union (EU) is to invest €4.4bn in South Africa’s clean energy industry as part of a global gateway investment package. South Africa becomes the first country to sign such an agreement with the Europe. It will focus on investment, the clean energy transition, skills, technology, and developing strategic industries along the entire supply chains. The energy funding would come from European financial institutions. The overall package totals €4.7bn which includes €303m in EU grants. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said it has started negotiations on the first Clean Trade and Investment Partnership. Trade between South Africa and EU totals €50bn today. “Take the clean hydrogen value chain,” she said. “South Africa has everything to become a global leader: You have clean energy in abundance, from wind to sun. Where hydrogen is challenged – and where it can really work | Podcast

Few subjects are as fraught and complex as hydrogen. In the latest 1895 episode, gasworld’s Rob Cockerill and Tom Dee reflect on the main hurdles the sector has faced during the last five years, which have slowed the uptake of mass-market adoption despite tangible progress. The team chronicled 23 companies that have faced either restructuring, scrapped projects or gone bankrupt, with many of these in the last four to five months. It is clear that financing not only remains an obstacle to projects being green-lit but also to corporate profitability in the sector. Last year was an especially uncomfortable year, “with the hydrogen bubble finally bursting”. Yet the prevailing narrative of an industry constantly on the ropes isn’t quite right, either. Progress is there to be seen. Amid stories of major corporates such as BP,… Read More »Where hydrogen is challenged – and where it can really work | Podcast
