Lhyfe secures €149m French government grant for large-scale hydrogen project

French hydrogen producer Lhyfe has confirmed a €149m subsidy from the French government for its Green Horizon project, one of the country’s largest upcoming green hydrogen production sites. The support package, signed with public sector investment bank Bpifrance, will be disbursed in phases and includes an initial €18m payment scheduled for June 2025. The full grant will be awarded over a four-year period, tied to project milestones. Located in Gonfreville-l’Orcher near Le Havre in northern France, the site is expected to produce up to 34 tonnes of green hydrogen per day once completed. The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) plans to produce clean hydrogen using heat from a high-temperature gas-cooled nuclear reactor at the Oarai Nuclear Engineering Institute in Ibaraki prefecture, northeast of Tokyo. JAEA has applied to Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority to connect a hydrogen production facility to its high-temperature test reactor, as part of a broader effort to decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors such as steelmaking and the chemical industry. If approved, the project could position high-temperature gas-cooled reactor technology as a viable production method for low-carbon hydrogen. Indian green energy firm to explore SAF project with Honeywell | Methanol & e-fuels

Renewable energy specialist NTPC Green Energy has partnered with the gas processing technology licensor Honeywell UOP India to explore production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in India. Under a memorandum of understanding signed on 25 April, the partners will assess how Honeywell’s eFining technology can produce SAF using green hydrogen and carbon dioxide captured from power plants operated by NTPC, which is India’s largest power utility company and the parent company of NTPC Green Energy. The project is part of NTPC Green Energy’s green hydrogen hub project at Pudimadaka in Andhra Pradesh – a 1,200 acre facility that will produce green chemicals using sustainable manufacturing methods. Industrial gas major Air Liquide has said it remains confident about the status of its commitment to build, own, and operate four large modular air separation units for the ExxonMobil low-carbon hydrogen project that is planned for Baytown, Texas, in the US. On the company’s latest earnings call, Adam Peters, CEO for Air Liquide North America, said the $850m project was moving forward as planned, with $275m of capital spend now committed. “Our confidence [in the project and its progress] remains very strong,” said Peters. “We have followed probably 25 different projects along the [US] Gulf Coast that are related to ammonia. TotalEnergies ramps up green hydrogen and SAF in Belgium | Energy News

Global energy company TotalEnergies has unveiled plans to increase investments in green hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at its petrochemical refining site in Antwerp, Belgium. The company will also phase out its oldest steam cracker at the site by the end of 2027 in response to changing market conditions, including a “significant surplus” of ethylene in Europe and the non-renewal of a third-party contract. Messer tees up €2.45bn of long-term funds for future projects | Finance

Messer has secured €2.45bn ($2.63bn) in long-term financing to support its growth strategy, following a strong full-year performance at the privately owned industrial gas major. The funding includes €1.3bn ($1.4bn) from private placements and €1.15bn ($1.23bn) in promissory notes arranged in 2024. Proceeds were used to fully refinance loans related to the 2019 Messer Industries acquisition, with the company also reporting lower financing costs as a result. After capital expenditure of around €900m ($970m) during the year, Messer ended 2024 with approximately €500m ($540m) in cash, plus net debt of €3.6bn ($3.87bn). The refinancing supports the company’s ongoing infrastructure investments, including a recently announced €60m ($64m) air separation unit at North Sea Port in Belgium. Hidrogenii switches on hydrogen liquefaction plant in Louisiana | Hydrogen

Hidrogenii, a joint venture between US green hydrogen company Plug Power and chemical manufacturing firm Olin Corporation, has turned on a 15-tonnes-per-day hydrogen liquefaction plant in St Gabriel, Louisiana. Hidrogenii was established to build and operate the facility, which is now one of the largest electrolytic hydrogen liquefaction plants in North America. The plant will liquefy hydrogen produced by Olin, enabling trailer-based shipments to customers in the US. Further down the line, its capacity will increase to process 40 tonnes of hydrogen a day. Andy Marsh, CEO of Plug Power, described the new plant as a milestone in expanding the company’s US hydrogen network. UK project to produce clean hydrogen and graphene from biogas

The project will use methane extracted from sewage waste as a feedstock for hydrogen production. Levidian’s Loop device uses electromagnetic waves to split methane – the main component of biogas – into hydrogen and solid carbon. The hydrogen will be used to power an onsite generator at the facility and the captured carbon will be used to produce graphene. Graphene is a lightweight, conductive form of carbon that’s used in electronics and to strengthen composite materials such as concrete, fibres and car tyres. Oman and Netherlands firm up liquid hydrogen corridor | Hydrogen

Oman and the Netherlands are to press ahead with developing a liquid hydrogen trade corridor, two years after a joint study agreement was signed to explore its potential. Under the new joint development agreement, the sultanate will look to export liquid hydrogen from Duqm port to the Port of Amsterdam for use in the Netherlands and Germany. Hydrogen is to be shipped using cryogenic technologies developed by technology and UAE supply chain company Ecolog. State-owned Hydrogen Oman (Hydrom) will oversee the project’s alignment with Oman’s wider hydrogen plans, with OQ Group expected to develop a liquid hydrogen terminal in Duqm.
