Hydrogen setback as Stanwell cancels Queensland project | Hydrogen

Australia’s green hydrogen sector has been dealt a major blow with news that Stanwell Corporation is stopping the Central Queensland Hydrogen Project. In a brief statement, it said the project had been a “valuable international collaboration that has provided important technical and commercial knowledge to support the future large-scale commercialisation of renewable hydrogen”, without detailing the reasons for pulling out. Funding is likely to be the main reason, as the Queensland government announced earlier this year it would not extend any further loans or grants for the project – and the broader slump in the hydrogen market will have been another factor. The ambitious project aimed to deliver 800 tonnes of green hydrogen per day and create almost 9,000 jobs, as well as delivering billions of dollars of export revenues over a 30-year lifespan. Port of Antwerp–Bruges targets hydrogen and CO2 opportunities | Europe

Port of Antwerp–Bruges is targeting hydrogen imports and carbon dioxide exports as it aims to position itself as Europe’s chemical and logistics hub. By 2030, it aims to import one million tonnes of hydrogen and derivates a year – not only for Belgium, but also as an energy source for industrial clusters in Germany and in other parts of Europe. It is building a large-scale carbon transport network and investing in facilities for importing low-carbon hydrogen, ammonia, methanol and biofuels. “All these projects are actively enabling the European Clean Industrial Deal, the focus of which is to create a competitive and climate-neutral industry, to become a reality,” it said in a statement. … to continue reading this article and more, please login, register for free, or consider subscribing to gasworld You’ve reached your weekly limit… Read More »Port of Antwerp–Bruges targets hydrogen and CO2 opportunities | Europe

Partners target 2028 for Norway green hydrogen facility launch | Hydrogen

Karmsund Hydrogen – owned by Norwegian Hydrogen, Sigma, and Karmsund Group – is partnering with HydePoint to build a green hydrogen facility in Karmsund. The facility, aiming to open in 2028, will be located at Karmsund Group’s service base, offering direct access to hydrogen users in the maritime and onshore sectors. The project plans to produce more than 3.000 tonnes annually based on 20 MW installed electrolysis capacity. “As a local company with strong roots in the business community here, we’re proud to take a concrete step toward establishing hydrogen production in Haugalandet,” said Marie Aanensen, Chair of the Board at Karmsund Hydrogen. … to continue reading this article and more, please login, register for free, or consider subscribing to gasworld You’ve reached your weekly limit to access free articles! FT Hydrogen Summit: Developing new hydrogen finance models to overcome offtake impasse | Hydrogen

Clean hydrogen is not likely to become easier to finance through long-term offtake agreements being made, so another approach is needed. In Europe, this could include an institution being created to buy up any surplus hydrogen that’s being produced with some kind of transparent pricing attached. The idea was floated by Christian Stuckmann, Vice-President of Hydrogen for the state-owned German energy company Uniper, speaking as part of a panel debate on the bankability of clean hydrogen projects at the FT Hydrogen Summit 2025 in London. “Europe needs to buy the hydrogen,” said Stuckmann. “There are mechanisms out there that it could adopt, such as the H2Global model. It is [an intervention] that is needed because long-term offtake agreements are not going to be signed. It is too complex a space for those commitments to be… Read More »FT Hydrogen Summit: Developing new hydrogen finance models to overcome offtake impasse | Hydrogen

Climate tech firm hails hydrogen biotech breakthrough | Hydrogen

A climate tech energy firm is claiming an industry breakthrough after producing ‘bio-stimulated’ hydrogen without drilling, electrolysis or energy-intensive surface facilities. Gold H2’s field trial, conducted in a legacy oilfield in California’s San Joaquin Basin, leverages microbiology and existing infrastructure to produce clean hydrogen directly from the subsurface. The trial recorded results of 40% hydrogen in the gas stream and 400,000 ppm of hydrogen in produced gases. ChampionX LLC, which specialises in engineered technologies, served as the oilfield services provider. “Gold H2 exists to do what no one ever has: produce clean hydrogen directly in the subsurface using biology, engineering, and existing energy infrastructure,” said CEO Prabhdeep Singh Sekhon. “This field trial is tangible proof. We’ve taken a climate liability and turned it into a scalable, low-cost hydrogen solution. It’s a new blueprint for decarbonisation, built… Read More »Climate tech firm hails hydrogen biotech breakthrough | Hydrogen

Liebreich provocations on cost spark debate at London hydrogen event | swiss green energy firm morgen energy

Michael Liebreich, the analyst and investor behind the ‘Hydrogen Ladder’, which organises the molecule’s use cases into an order of likely adoption, has repeated his recent calls for a reset when it comes to hydrogen and its applications. In a keynote interview at the FT Hydrogen Summit 2025 in London, Liebreich’s growing scepticism about the direction and progress of the industry was front and centre. “I find it hard to say, but hydrogen is not a good fuel [for some of its target use cases],” he said. “It won’t do heating; it won’t do transport. It won’t even do ammonia. It is just too expensive.” Liebreich’s provocative words to a room of committed hydrogen industry players argued that politics was at work, with policymakers having become attached to hydrogen as an article of faith, in… Read More »Liebreich provocations on cost spark debate at London hydrogen event | swiss green energy firm morgen energy

Spanish energy firms to turn salt cavern into hydrogen storage | Hydrogen

Spanish companies Solvay and Enagás plan to develop a hydrogen storage hub in Cantabria, Spain, that could play a role in Europe’s decarbonisation efforts. The project will involve the partners repurposing salt caverns – originally created for the production of soda ash – for the long-term storage of hydrogen. Solvay, a soda ash production specialist, is now actively repurposing its network of salt caverns into strategic assets for energy storage, particularly for hydrogen and compressed air. … to continue reading this article and more, please login, register for free, or consider subscribing to gasworld You’ve reached your weekly limit to access free articles! FT Hydrogen Summit: Hydrogen Council urges pragmatism in ‘rollercoaster’ world | drive final investments

The hydrogen industry and the governments that support it in key markets need to maintain focus and keep investing in a changing world. The pitch was made by Ivana Jemelkova, CEO of the Hydrogen Council, which is a key global advocate for the industry. She was addressing delegates in an on-stage interview at the FT Hydrogen Summit 2025 in London. “There are many variables and pressures when it comes to hydrogen. And at times it feels like a rollercoaster ride in relation to the molecule’s regulation. But the trajectory of the hydrogen industry is clear: the industry is growing fast in terms of committed capital, and things are maturing and moving. The strongest large projects, in particular, are succeeding,” said Jemelkova. The need for pragmatism that Jemelkova made was reference to the West’s quest for… Read More »FT Hydrogen Summit: Hydrogen Council urges pragmatism in ‘rollercoaster’ world | drive final investments

John Cockerill Hydrogen raises €116m for electrolyser push

Engineering firm John Cockerill Hydrogen has secured €116m in a second capital raise which enables it to roll out its next generation of pressurised alkaline electrolyser technologies. Fluxys, a Belgian infrastructure group, has joined the operation as a strategic partner after acquiring an undisclosed stake, which opens up the prospect of developing a hydrogen value chain. The support of Belgian sovereign wealth fund SFPIM and regional public body Wallonie Entreprendre complement John Cockerill’s roots, while global tech company SLB and Rely, the joint venture with Technip Energies, strengthen its industrial profile. The group, which secured $230m in a 2024 financing round, is working on a portfolio of projects and plans to deliver them from its global manufacturing centres. The company said the new raise covered “nearly all” the funding needed to scale the hydrogen business.… Read More »John Cockerill Hydrogen raises €116m for electrolyser push

TES and CPC Finland announce Finnish e-NG joint venture | Carbon Dioxide News

Synthetic fuels company Tree Energy Solutions and renewables outfit CPC Finland have launched a joint company, Luoto Energia, which aims to produce electric natural gas (e-NG), the green synthetic gas made from renewable hydrogen and CO2 that TES produces. The project, on a 20-hectare site in an extended area of the Port of Rauma, will have an electrolyser capacity of up to 500MW and is expected to produce around 60,000 tonnes of green hydrogen that can be converted into 125,000 tonnes of e-NG (also known as e-methane) per year. The biogenic CO2 needed for e-NG production will be sourced from Finnish biogenic emitters. Marco Alverà, Co-founder and Chief Executive of TES, said, “As a drop-in fuel, e-NG can be used to decarbonise sectors such as steel, shipping and heavy transport.” The green hydrogen may make… Read More »TES and CPC Finland announce Finnish e-NG joint venture | Carbon Dioxide News
