UK launches 10-year industrial strategy with push on clean power and digital

The UK is doubling investment in clean energy industries to more than £30bn a year by 2035 under its 10-year industrial strategy that launches today [23 June]. But the initial 22-page document is light on specific details, beyond ‘prioritising investment’ for the so-called IS-8 categories (advanced manufacturing, defence, clean energy, digital and technology, creative, financial services, life sciences, and professional and business services). The UK government claims the intervention will boosts 7,000 businesses that will see their electricity bills fall 25% from 2027, by up to £40 per megawatt hour. In particular, electricity-intensive manufacturing businesses will be exempt from paying levies such as the renewables obligation, feed-in tariffs and the capacity market, helping level the playing field and make them more internationally competitive. Orlen eyes European hydrogen supply network after funding boost

The funds will be paid out from the National Recovery Plan budget. Hydrogen Eagle is expected to produce hydrogen using renewable electricity and municipal waste, for the transport and industrial sectors. The other project, Green H2, is focused specifically on Orlen’s refinery operations in Gdańsk. The project will involve a 100MW electrolyser powered by renewable energy, used to decarbonise fuel production at the site. Lotos Green H2, a special-purpose company within Orlen, will run the project. Orlen is aiming to use 350,000 tonnes of renewable and low-emission hydrogen annually by 2035. Orlen Capital announced last month it will invest in Hystar, the Norwegian manufacturer of high-efficiency proton-exchange-membrane electrolysers for large-scale, zero-emission hydrogen production. Seven countries to receive $1bn towards industrial decarbonisation

Brazil, Egypt, Mexico, Namibia, South Africa, Turkey, and Uzbekistan have been selected for the Climate Investment Funds’ (CIF) first industrial decarbonisation initiative. The multilateral programme is dedicated to reducing industrial greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in developing countries and boosting their economic competitiveness, with the value of green industrial goods projected to reach $2 trillion by 2030. The seven countries will collaborate with multilateral development banks and private sector partners to develop investment plans, which will be submitted to CIF’s governing board for endorsement. Air Products scraps Immingham green hydrogen project in UK | Air Products News

Air Products has scrapped plans to build a large-scale green hydrogen import and production project in the Port of Immingham, UK, blaming a “lack of commitment” by ministers, according to reports. The Immingham Green Energy Terminal, developed with Associated British Ports (ABP), was set to import green hydrogen from Air Products’ 2.2GW Neom project, and produce its own volumes from a 300MW plant. Air Products suggested that the new plant would create 1,400 jobs and over £4.5bn in economic value in the Humber region. Russia LNG checks to rise as EU gets tough | Europe

The European Commission has set out legislation to phase out Russian gas by the end of 2027 and will step up tracing and monitoring to minimise circumvention with liquefied natural gas (LNG). While Europe recently introduced its 18th package of sanctions, EU imports of Russian LNG rose 18% to 24.2 bcm last year. EDP Group and SIAD’s IGAT to build largest solar-and-storage plant in Italy | Italy Gas News

Italian chemicals company IGAT and the utility EDP Energia Italia are to build a distributed generation photovoltaic solar plant. It is the largest EDP project in Italy to be integrated with a storage system. The solar plant will be installed at IGAT’s industrial site in the province of Caserta, with total capacity of 2.5MWp, boosting the company’s flexibility in energy management and enhancing its decarbonisation. IGAT, part of the SIAD Group, specialises in the production of oxygen, nitrogen, and argon. Georgia gas plant successfully trials 50% hydrogen blend | Hydrogen

Utility company Georgia Power has successfully completed a trial using a 50% hydrogen blend to operate a natural gas turbine at its McDonough-Atkinson plant in Georgia. Japan’s Mitsubishi Power completed the hydrogen blending on one M501GAC gas turbine unit, with an approximate output of 283MW. The pair have said the effort is the largest test of its kind to date. The 50% blend provides a 22% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions compared with 100% natural gas. Policy and market uncertainty continues to cast a shadow over the hydrogen, CCUS and biomethane sectors – and a dedicated session at the Gas, LNG and Future of Energy conference in London explored the latest developments. Mhairidh Evans, Vice-President Global Head of CCUS Research at analyst group Wood Mackenzie, said, “It looks like the 45Q tax credit, probably the most famous CCS incentive globally, will stay, but almost $4bn of funding for projects has been pulled. India refineries to invest $23bn in green hydrogen build-out | Hydrogen

Indian refineries are set to invest ₹2 trillion ($23bn) in green hydrogen projects over the next few years, according to the Independent Commodity Intelligence Services (ICIS), marking one of the world’s most ambitious national pushes for hydrogen decarbonisation. The plans include tenders for 42,000 tonnes per year of green hydrogen production across domestic oil refineries, recently confirmed by India’s Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri. “These tenders have been floated by the refineries while 128 more will be issued by state-owned refineries based on the outcome of those tenders,” he said on social media platform X.
