European funding could enable South Africa to position itself as a global shipping hub for green ammonia, according to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Referring to investments under the Global Gateway package, in the presence of South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa, she said member states and the private sector were making a difference at ground level. “I am thinking, for example, of the Coega Green Ammonia project in Nelson Mandela Bay [in Eastern Cape Province],” she said. “With it, South Africa is on its way to becoming a global shipping hub as green ammonia becomes a clean maritime fuel of choice. Rehlko-owned company Clarke Energy has commissioned its first membrane-based biogas upgrading plant in India. The facility is located at a municipal solid waste anaerobic digestion site operated by Srinivas Waste Management Services Private Ltd (SWMS) in Chetpet, Chennai. The new system replaces a pressure swing adsorption (PSA) unit with a membrane-based purification system capable of upgrading 600 cubic metres an hour of raw biogas into high-purity biomethane. German industrial electrolyser firm Sunfire has been selected by P2X Solutions to conduct the front-end engineering design (FEED) study for a 40MW hydrogen project in Joensuu, Finland. Green hydrogen produced by the electrolysis plant will be used to produce e-methanol, a synthetic fuel that plays a key role in reducing CO2 emissions. Sunfire will deliver its pressurised alkaline technology. Herkko Plit, CEO of P2X Solutions, said the study is an important milestone towards investment at Joensuu, which will triple its green hydrogen production capacity. Europe’s chemical industry has reached a “tipping point”, according to a new report by economic advisory firm Oxford Economics commissioned by energy company Ineos. It warns that energy costs, regulatory pressures, and foreign competition could wipe out half of Europe’s ethylene capacity by 2030. There are signs that this could also reshape demand for industrial gases across the continent. The chemical sector is Europe’s fourth largest industry and a major consumer of gases such as hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen for feedstock, synthesis and refining. As output declines, demand for these gases could weaken in key production hubs in Germany, Belgium, and France.
