German climate-tech startup Greenlyte Carbon Technologies is using solar energy to power its new plant that produces synthetic fuels from captured carbon dioxide and green hydrogen. The LiquidSolar SNG plant in Duisburg will capture up to 40 tonnes of carbon dioxide and deliver five tonnes of e-methane each year. The technology works by pulling CO2 from the air and binding it into a bicarbonate solution using a liquid sorbent. This bicarbonate is then fed into an alkaline electrolysis unit, where the applied current releases the CO2 and simultaneously produces green hydrogen. With both molecules generated on site, the plant can combine the captured CO2 and the hydrogen to create e-methane. ExxonMobil has paused plans for its giant blue hydrogen production plant in Texas, US, according to new reports. CEO Darren Woods reportedly told Reuters that the company has been struggling to secure sufficient offtake from the one billion cubic feet per day plant, which had been targeting start-up in 2027-2028. Unveiled in 2022, the project was intended to be developed within Exxon’s Baytown refining and chemicals complex to produce hydrogen from natural gas while capturing a high share of carbon dioxide emissions. Portions of the blue hydrogen are set to be converted into ammonia for international offtake markets. Last year, Japanese majors and said they were exploring deals for buy volumes. NASA has awarded liquid hydrogen supply contracts to Plug Power and Air Products to deliver around 16,700 tonnes of fuel across its US facilities. The liquid hydrogen will be used to fuel NASA’s cryogenic rocket engines and support aeronautics and propulsion research at its centres in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Ohio. Worth a combined $147m, the contracts cover 16,560 tonnes of liquid hydrogen for Kennedy Space Centre, Cape Canaveral, Marshall, and Stennis, while Plug Power will supply the remaining 220 tonnes to the Glenn Research Centre and Armstrong Test Facility. NASA’s liquid hydrogen awards are fixed-price contracts that guarantee set quantities and prices for future deliveries.
