Europe allocates €5bn to Germany for hydrogen and CCUS | Germany

The European Commission has approved €5bn funding for Germany to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in its industrial production processes through hydrogen, carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) and electrification. The funding, approved under EU state aid rules, aims to help companies meet EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) targets and will take the form of two-way carbon contracts for difference, called ‘Climate Protection Contracts’, with a 15-year duration. The projects supported under the scheme, which will be selected through an open bidding process, will range from the replacement of traditional steel production processes by hydrogen direct reduction processes to fuel switches in the cement and lime sector to electrification in the chemical sector. Aramco secures half share of Air Products Qudra’s blue hydrogen subsidiary | Hydrogen

Energy and chemicals company Aramco has acquired a 50% stake in Air Products Qudra’s (APQ’s) blue hydrogen subsidiary in Saudi Arabia, Blue Hydrogen Industrial Gases Company (BHIG). BHIG has plans to produce blue hydrogen, produced with carbon capture, at Aramco’s carbon capture and storage (CCS) sites in the Jubail Industrial City area, offering hydrogen at scale. Ashraf Al Ghazzawi, Aramco Executive Vice-President of Strategy and Corporate Development, said the network could help the venture to capitalise on emerging opportunities in Saudi and globally. Elyse Energy selects biofuel technology for French SAF plant | Decarbonisation

French sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) developer Elyse Energy has selected biofuel technology that will convert wood waste and forestry residues into cleaner jet fuel using clean hydrogen. Elyse, alongside its project partners, selected thyssenkrupp Uhde’s BioTfueL® technology for its BioTJet project in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques region of France, which aims to produce 110,000 tonnes of e-fuels from 2029. The biofuel technology was tested in a semi-industrial plant between 2010 and 2021 by the Bionext consortium, made up of Avril, Axens, CEA, IFP Energies nouvelles, Total Energies, and thyssenkrupp Uhde. Nel Hydrogen US lands electrolyser order from Scottish hydrogen hub | Technology

Hydrogen technology company Nel Hydrogen US has secured an order for a 2.5 megawatt (MW) containerised proton exchange membrane (PEM) unit for the Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub project in the north-east of Scotland. It is the company’s second significant electrolyser order in the first quarter. The green hydrogen production, storage and distribution facility is being delivered through a joint venture between energy giant BP and Aberdeen City Council. Hydrasun, which specialises in fluid transfer, power and control systems, awarded the contract following its successful bid to design and integrate the hydrogen refuelling station and associated infrastructure. UK study outlines nine proposals for future Grangemouth oil refinery use | Hydrogen

UK feasibility study Project Willow has published nine options for the soon-to-close Scottish oil refinery Grangemouth’s future industrial use after evaluating more than 300 technologies. The publication of the £1.5m study – published today by global business consultancy EY in conjunction with the UK government, the Scottish government and refining and energy trading business Petroineos – follows the recent Petroineos decision to decommission the oil refinery. Industrial gases will be critical to at least half of the final proposals. These include fuel switching (replacing natural gas combustion with low carbon hydrogen), anaerobic digestion (AD, fermentation of organic waste and biogas for biomethane), e-methanol and methanol-to-jet (low-carbon hydrogen to produce methanol and convert to SAF), and e-ammonia (produced from hydrogen for shipping and chemicals). In a post on the Truth Social platform, US President Donald Trump wrote, “We agreed to an immediate ceasefire on all energy [sites] and infrastructure, with an understanding that we will be working quickly to have a complete ceasefire.” The energy ceasefire naturally applies to both sides. ABB, Charbone plan 15 North American green hydrogen sites in five years

Under a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the companies have agreed to connect Charbone’s inaugural plant in Sorel-Tracy to the Hydro-Québec grid as a first move. The facility, scheduled to go live by the end of Q2 2025, is intended to serve as a blueprint for future projects and will produce around 400kg of hydrogen in its first phase.
