First for hydrogen as EU issues €1.25bn to energy projects

The European Commission will grant almost €1.25bn ($1.3bn) in funding through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) to a raft of energy initiatives including hydrogen and carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) projects. The bulk of funding (€750m or $770m) will go towards eight electricity grid projects such as the Bornholm Energy island project which involves building an underwater power cable to connect Denmark and Germany. It will also help to bring in power from offshore wind farms, with the ability to handle up to three gigawatts of wind energy. Over €250m ($257m) is earmarked for 21 hydrogen development projects including BarMar-H2med between Spain and France, the backbone projects in Italy, Portugal and Spain and the hydrogen corridors and routes in the Baltic region. Another €250m ($257m) will be used to build three projects and fund… Read More »First for hydrogen as EU issues €1.25bn to energy projects

Evonik, VoltH2 to build 50MW electrolyser in Delfzijl for hydrogen peroxide production | Hydrogen

German chemicals firm Evonik has signed a term sheet with hydrogen specialist VoltH2 to build a 50MW electrolyser at the Delfzijl chemical park in the Netherlands. The electrolyser will supply Evonik’s hydrogen peroxide plant, once operational in 2027. Until then, Evonik will continue to use onsite fossil-based hydrogen for hydrogen peroxide production. Evonik Peroxide Netherlands Managing Director, Peter Metten, said the company hopes to switch its production over entirely to renewable sources. Specifically, the company has committed to a 25% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions between 2021 and 2030, and Net Zero emissions by 2050. Hydrogen peroxide is widely used as a bleaching agent, disinfectant and oxidising agent. It is mainly produced by the anthraquinone process, which involves reacting hydrogen and oxygen in a catalytic process. André Jurres, founder and Managing Director… Read More »Evonik, VoltH2 to build 50MW electrolyser in Delfzijl for hydrogen peroxide production | Hydrogen

Luxcara and GreenH green hydrogen project reaches FID in Norway | Hydrogen

A major green hydrogen project in Norway involving Luxcara and GreenH has reached final investment decision (FID). The Bodø Hydrogen Project, located at Langstranda in Bodø municipality, will in phase 1 have an electrolyser capacity of 20 MW and an annual production capacity of up to 3,100 tonnes of green hydrogen. In phase 2, an additional 10 MW will potentially be installed, raising annual production capacity to about 4,800 tonnes. Luxcara and GreenH recently secured NOK129m (c.€11m) in funding from Enova, a state enterprise owned by the Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment, for the Bodø project in December 2024, enabling them to now move to FID. Preparatory work on site is already underway and commercial operations are expected in 2026. … to continue reading this article and more, please login, register for free, or… Read More »Luxcara and GreenH green hydrogen project reaches FID in Norway | Hydrogen

US urged to take long-term view on hydrogen | Hydrogen

The US is well positioned for hydrogen growth but the new administration should be mindful of its long-term potential and solutions will evolve over decades, according to Austin Knight, Vice-President of Hydrogen at Chevron New Energies. Speaking on the Energy Gang podcast, he said, “Hydrogen is happening, we have cases to show what’s real. We’re actively developing the HyVelocity Hub on the Gulf Coast, integrating natural gas value chains and carbon capture, which customers around the world are demanding. We have to remember all this is long term and these solutions are going to play out over decades – and there will be many more administrations.” Knight highlighted three main sectors where hydrogen beats the alternatives. “Firstly, heavy industry for the high heat applications, which are typically using natural gas and refining, and other high heat requirements;… Read More »US urged to take long-term view on hydrogen | Hydrogen

ExxonMobil signs HOA with Trammo for up to 500,000 tonnes of Baytown ammonia | Ammonia

ExxonMobil could supply France’s Trammo with 300,000 to 500,000 tonnes of low-carbon ammonia per year from its planned Baytown hydrogen facility in Texas. A Heads of Agreement (HOA) has been signed to explore the potential off-take of ammonia. Trammo plans to sell the product in Europe and worldwide for fertiliser production and other industrial applications. The Baytown facility is believed to be the largest of its type. Once in operation, it will produce up to one billion cubic feet of low-carbon hydrogen daily and more than one million tonnes of low-carbon ammonia per annum. New ammonia body launches certification scheme | Ammonia

Ammonia Europe wants to boost collaboration and transparency Ammonia Europe wants to boost collaboration and transparency New business association Ammonia Europe has launched a voluntary certification scheme which aims to provide transparency to European customers on the carbon footprint of their ammonia purchases. An Ammonia Certificate is issued for each tonne of ammonia with a product attribute declaration of the footprint and energy origin, such as hydrogen from electrolysis, biomethane or methane. It uses a mass balance chain-of-custody system with optional ‘book and claim’ in the single market, and pilot audits at Fertiberia and Yara renewable ammonia plants. With a decarbonised ammonia system targeted for 2050, the new body aims to foster collaboration across the continent’s value chain and unlock the potential of ammonia for climate neutrality. Eleven founding members are listed on its website,… Read More »New ammonia body launches certification scheme | Ammonia

A new era for LNG under Trump – but at what cost? | LNG

As Europe turns its back on Russian gas, the US is stepping up to meet the challenge, with Trump’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) export policies set to unlock a new era of energy dominance. This is to be driven by soaring EU demand, Trump’s promise to lift the moratorium and the US’s record-breaking LNG output growth in 2025.  Having declared an ‘energy emergency’, the newly minted US President banned offshore wind and withdrew the US from the Paris Agreement – a move he previously took during his first term in office. This shift in priorities signals a stark reversal for clean energy, which now finds itself the sacrificial lamb in Trump’s aggressive push to favour LNG. Just three days into the job, the US President lifted permits on two LNG plants in Louisiana, which “were… Read More »A new era for LNG under Trump – but at what cost? | LNG

Trump talks tough on LNG supplies, US-KSA deal and Europe  | LNG

US President Trump wants rapid approvals to speed up energy growth US President Trump wants rapid approvals to speed up energy growth New US President Donald Trump gave guarantees on the security of future LNG supplies to Europe during a characteristically straight-talking video address at Davos this afternoon. Despite only being three days into the job, his wide-ranging 45-minute presentation reminded delegates and the world listening in online of his bold leadership style and desire to act decisively, following on from the slew of executive orders that were signed on the first day. Responding to a question from Patrick Pouyanne, Chairman of TotalEnergies, the fourth largest oil and gas company, he said, “If you make a deal, we make a deal – you get it,” he said. Trump went on to talk about two plants… Read More »Trump talks tough on LNG supplies, US-KSA deal and Europe  | LNG
