Clearing hurdles to decarbonisation | Special features

© COP29 / Decarbonisation was firmly in the spotlight at Baku last month © COP29 / Decarbonisation was firmly in the spotlight at Baku last month Deep in the complex depths of decarbonisation is a simple unalterable truth: we need to reduce carbon emissions faster to reach Net Zero targets. Until we collectively sign up to accelerating renewable technologies – as governments, industries and consumers – then the wheels of change are not going to move fast enough to implement an effective transition. Amid a range of market and industry challenges to enacting green-led economies, a two-track narrative is taking hold: renewables are actively being courted while we continue to extract fossil fuels ahead of all the newer technologies reaching suitable scale. It is being positioned as a ‘pragmatic’ solution, albeit one that doesn’t placate… Read More »Clearing hurdles to decarbonisation | Special features

Hydrogen challenges are coming into focus | Features

In November, and just a few hours after the Republicans impending return to the White House was confirmed, the professional consultancy Wood Mackenzie hosted a two-day hydrogen conference next to St Paul’s Cathedral in London. It brought together a range of industry stakeholders and analysts to reflect on the state of play in the still-nascent low-carbon hydrogen market. Christian Annesley shares some insights and talking points  Blue hydrogen ‘looks stronger with Trump win’ – Wood Mackenzie The nascent hydrogen market could skew more towards blue rather than green hydrogen in the next few years, with Donald Trump’s win in the US presidential election changing the calculus around the potential trajectory of US public policy. The assessment comes from Murray Douglas, Vice-President and Head of Hydrogen Research at the analyst group and professional consultancy Wood Mackenzie,… Read More »Hydrogen challenges are coming into focus | Features

Constellation and CSIRO to explore natural hydrogen and helium in Western Australia | Helium

Constellation Resources Limited has signed a research agreement with Australia’s national science agency CSIRO to search for natural helium and hydrogen in Western Australia. Initially, the joint effort will focus on Constellation’s two basin-scale Edmund Collier and Yerrida projects. This will include CSIRO scientists evaluating several available datasets, which could identify the presence of gas. The project is part funded by CSIRO’s kick-start programme, an initiative that provides funding and support for Australian start-ups with research expertise and capabilities. Results from the initial work will support Constellation’s planned soil and gas sampling programmes, which could commence in early 2025, subject to completion of land access clearances. … to continue reading this article and more, please login, register for free, or consider subscribing to gasworld Source link

Air Liquide secures €110m for renewable hydrogen project in Antwerp

Air Liquide has secured a €110m ($116m) grant from the European Innovation Fund to support its ENHANCE project, an initiative aimed at producing and distributing low-carbon and renewable hydrogen from ammonia in the port of Antwerp-Bruges, Belgium. The project involves plans to build a large-scale ammonia cracking plant and a hydrogen liquefier, aiming to produce hydrogen on an industrial scale using ammonia as a feedstock. The ENHANCE project will retrofit an existing hydrogen production unit in Antwerp-Bruges to use renewable ammonia instead of natural gas, significantly reducing carbon emissions. By leveraging ammonia as a feedstock, the facility is expected to cut carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions by more than 300,000 tonnes annually. The hydrogen produced will cater to hard-to-decarbonise sectors such as refineries, chemicals, heavy-duty road transport, maritime shipping and aviation. “This project would capitalise on… Read More »Air Liquide secures €110m for renewable hydrogen project in Antwerp

UK East Coast Cluster CCS projects receive go ahead | CCS

Costain, bp and Equinor have received confirmation to proceed to the execution phase for two East Coast Cluster projects on Teesside. Construction is expected to commence from mid-2025, with start-up targeted for 2028. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said the investment launches a new era for clean energy in Britain, boosting energy security, backing industries, and supporting thousands of ‘highly skilled jobs’ in Teesside and the North East. It follows the government’s decision in October to invest £22bn in hydrogen and carbon capture and storage (CCS) in the next 25 years (click here). Costain’s delivery partner role will see it deliver and manage the engineering, procurement and construction (EPCm) of the Northern Endurance Partnership’s (NEP) onshore CO2 gathering system on Teesside, and associated utilities for Net Zero Teesside Power (NZT Power). It is one of nine EPC… Read More »UK East Coast Cluster CCS projects receive go ahead | CCS
