UK steel sector stands at sustainable crossroads | Hydrogen

News that Specialty Steel UK will enter administration following a winding down petition in the High Court is another major blow for the UK steel sector – and the country’s broader industrial strategy. Placing the UK’s third-largest steelworks under government control, creating an uncertain future for nearly 1,500 workers in Rotherham and Sheffield, has ramifications far beyond the steel industry. The company, which uses scrap metal to manufacture steel, will now be placed in the hands of the official receiver – a government appointed liquidator – and special managers from consultancy firm Teneo. The steel made by Liberty Speciality Steels can be found in vessels including aircraft carriers, military aircraft components and defence systems, landing gear, controls and in components for oil and gas, power generation and rail. … to continue reading you must be… Read More »UK steel sector stands at sustainable crossroads | Hydrogen

Can SOEC tip the balance on green ammonia costs? | principal product applications specialist chandra macauley

The promise of green ammonia is vast. But without breakthroughs in production and scale, it risks remaining more aspiration than solution. The sector must develop new production technologies and integrate them with renewables. It also needs the infrastructure and market conditions to scale before ammonia can realise its role in clean hydrogen. Among the biggest hurdles is cost. Electricity makes up 40–50% of production, putting efficiency at the centre of competitiveness. Ceres is betting on solid oxide electrolysis (SOEC). Designed to operate at high temperatures, the system could enable green ammonia at scale. By using waste heat from the process, Ceres says SOEC could reduce energy consumption by around 30% per kilogram of hydrogen produced. In its upcoming In Conversation with Cereswebinar on 3 September, H2 View will speak with Chief Product Officer Nick Lawrence… Read More »Can SOEC tip the balance on green ammonia costs? | principal product applications specialist chandra macauley
