Setting a target per-kilo price for producing hydrogen is not that useful, since every hydrogen project has its own dynamics and attached economics. The price question was posed and tackled in a panel session on hydrogen project risks at analyst group Wood Mackenzie’s Hydrogen Conference 2025, taking place this week in London. Christian Stuckmann, Vice-President of Business Development in Hydrogen for the energy company Uniper, said the company’s projects in the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands had no top-level target price attached for good reasons. “Every business case [in every market] is bespoke,” he said. Industrial gas major Air Liquide has begun operating its ammonia cracking pilot plant at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges in Belgium. The unit can convert 30 tonnes of ammonia to hydrogen per day. German air and gas compression supplier Aerzen is set to launch large compressors for the hydrogen industry. Speaking on the Energy Gang podcast from Wood Mackenzie, Sascha Sissiou, Sales Director for the Middle East and Africa at Aerzen, said, “We developed one of the biggest hydrogen compressors. It will be released in a month’s time [and is] a real step forward.” He said the business splits between compressors and blowers and covers a wide range of industrial applications. Aerzen, with sales that topped €658.6m in 2024, is drawing on decades of experience with hydrogen compression.
