BASF and ExxonMobil plan hydrogen pyrolysis plant in Texas | Hydrogen

Chemicals company BASF and oil and gas firm ExxonMobil have unveiled plans for a demonstration plant that uses methane pyrolysis technology to produce up to 2,000 tonnes of low-carbon hydrogen and 6,000 tonnes of solid carbon product a year. The proposed plant would be located at ExxonMobil’s Baytown complex in Texas and would use existing natural gas infrastructure. The two companies have signed a joint development agreement to co-develop the methane pyrolysis technology and advance it toward commercial scale. Methane pyrolysis uses electricity to split natural gas or biomethane into hydrogen and solid carbon without generating carbon dioxide, and it uses about five times less electricity than water electrolysis and requires no water. … to continue reading this article and more, please login, register for free, or consider subscribing to gasworld You’ve reached your weekly… Read More »BASF and ExxonMobil plan hydrogen pyrolysis plant in Texas | Hydrogen

UK should adopt low carbon ammonia standard by 2027 | Ammonia

The UK should develop a standard for low-carbon ammonia by 2027, according to a report from the UK Ammonia Alliance – a newly formed coalition of companies from across the ammonia value chain. The standard should be modelled on the low carbon hydrogen standard and aligned with international certification schemes, the report states. It made seven other recommendations, including recognising the role of low-carbon ammonia in the future economy, committing to producing an ammonia white paper by 2026 and adopting a low-carbon ammonia production target. Alongside actions to make the UK a global trading hub, the paper said the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero should expand the hydrogen to power business model to include ammonia-to-power projects, review safety regulations that consider ammonia as a fuel, industrial chemical and feedstock, and introduce a streamlined… Read More »UK should adopt low carbon ammonia standard by 2027 | Ammonia

ReiCat delivers hydrogen recycling to fragrance and flavours maker | Hydrogen

German gas treatment specialist ReiCat has supplied its hydrogen recycling system to flavour and fragrance manufacturer Symrise. The tech will enable the firm to clean up hydrogen that has picked up impurities during the production of ingredients for perfumes and nutritional and taste enhancers. The system works by capturing the exhaust stream and purifying it in a complex multi-stage process before the hydrogen is cycled back into production. “With our hydrogen recycling systems, we make an important contribution to the circular economy in industrial processes,” said Michael Höfling, CEO of ReiCat. Symrise purchased its first system from ReiCat in 2017 to decarbonise its US site. The latest deal will see the tech installed at its facility in Granada, Spain. “Projects like this demonstrate that hydrogen recycling is an indispensable complement to power-to-X,” added Höfling. 3D… Read More »ReiCat delivers hydrogen recycling to fragrance and flavours maker | Hydrogen

COP30 round-up: sustainable fuel, bioenergy and Africa green hydrogen | events

Sustainable fuel pledges from countries attending COP30 in Brazil have increased to 23 countries. Initially only Brazil, Japan, Italy, and India had signed up to promote clean energy sources, such as hydrogen and its derivatives, biogases, biofuels, and synthetic fuels. But COP30 CEO Ana Toni said there has now been a strong uptake, with the Belem 4x pledge, coinciding with the energy-focusd days at the annual intergovernmental climate conference. “It shows that the transition to a low-carbon economy is irreversible,” she said. Attending Friday’s panel was Alistair Phillips-Davies, Chief Executive of SSE and Co-chair of the Utilities for Net Zero Alliance (UNEZA), with 53 members worked at cutting carbon emissions. He acknowledged the world is “long on targets but short on delivery,” before highlighting work at Dogger Bank off the coast of the UK –… Read More »COP30 round-up: sustainable fuel, bioenergy and Africa green hydrogen | events
