UK study to explore oxygen dosing and alternatives for hydrogen pipelines | Hydrogen

Engineering consultancy Penspen will assess the use of oxygen as a potential solution to prevent hydrogen embrittlement as the UK builds out a national hydrogen pipeline network. The project has been awarded by National Gas Transmission and is being funded through UK energy regulator Ofgem’s Network Innovation Allowance. Hydrogen is known to cause steel pipelines to become more brittle by reducing their structural integrity. It poses a challenge for both new hydrogen infrastructure and the repurposing of existing gas assets. Oxygen added in small, controlled amounts can inhibit embrittlement by absorbing onto the steel’s surface and blocking hydrogen from entering the metal. The findings could play a key role in future pipeline projects. National Gas Transmission is developing a proposed 1,500-mile hydrogen transmission system to support energy security and the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate industrial sectors.… Read More »UK study to explore oxygen dosing and alternatives for hydrogen pipelines | Hydrogen

Chlor-alkali firm starts California plant expansion to market by-product hydrogen | Hydrogen

US-based K2 Pure Solutions has started expanding its Californian chlor-alkali site with plans to sell by-product hydrogen in the state. The company said its existing plant in Pittsburg would be expanded and equipped with hydrogen capture, purification, and compression systems. The chlor-alkali plant produces bleach, which includes the electrolysis of brine – generating chlorine, hydrogen, and sodium hydroxide, with the hydrogen typically vented. But K2 says it has partnered with gas marketer Pacc Services to find customers for the molecules that would be otherwise wasted. “Rather than allowing this hydrogen byproduct to go unused, K2 is investing in advanced systems to capture, purify, compress, and distribute it as a low-carbon fuel,” K2 said. H2 View understands it will be targeting local transportation, industrial, and power markets. The firm has not announced the volume of hydrogen… Read More »Chlor-alkali firm starts California plant expansion to market by-product hydrogen | Hydrogen

EU draws the line on Russian gas with gradual ban from 2026, oil set to follow suit in 2027

Given its determination to shake off the shackles of dependence on Russian oil and gas imports, the European Union (EU) has decided to lay down the law on these fossil fuels by holding the line on the proposed gradual ban on imports of pipeline gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) from next year, with oil expected to suffer the same fate in 2027 in response to what is being portrayed as Russia’s systematic weaponisation of energy supplies.
