Build begins on Austria iron plant that uses hydrogen | Hydrogen

A trio of partners has broken ground on a hydrogen-based ironmaking plant in Linz, Austria. The H4Smelt demonstration facility will use HYFOR (hydrogen-based fine-ore reduction), a direct reduction technology for iron ore fines developed by UK-headquartered firm Primetals Technologies. The project will take place at a plant owned by technology group Voestalpine and 70% of the iron ore for the plant will be supplied by global mining company Rio Tinto. The process, fuelled by green hydrogen from Voestalpine’s electrolysis plant, is designed to reduce emissions from ironmaking, which traditionally relies on carbon-intensive blast furnaces for hot metal and commercial hot-briquetted iron (HBI) production.
