A green hydrogen production trial has started at the Suntory Minami Alps Hakushu water plant in Japan.
Located at Japan’s largest power-to-gas plant in Yamanashi Prefecture, the trial involves replacing part of the site’s heat energy with hydrogen using newly developed high-efficiency, low-NOx hydrogen boilers.
The 16MW facility will explore how hydrogen can substitute natural gas in beverage production, a model with implications for decarbonising food and drink manufacturing globally. The trial also involves Suntory Hakushu Distillery.
If operating round-the-clock, hydrogen production would total 2,200 tonnes annually.
