European green hydrogen production company Lhyfe has made its first delivery of renewable hydrogen in the Netherlands, supplying Essent – the country’s largest energy supplier.
The hydrogen will enable the GROHW project, which is an initiative in the Deventer region that aims to produce green hydrogen for various local applications, including hybrid heat pumps for office heating and industrial burners. Waste heat and oxygen generated from hydrogen production will also be reused.
Lhyfe will provide renewable hydrogen to Essent under a multi-year supply contract, first referenced in the company’s 2024 half-year results.
“The first delivery to Essent marks the kick-off of our commercial activity in the Netherlands – a priority market for us – in the best possible way,” said Luc Graré, Head of Central & Eastern Europe at Lhyfe.
The GROHW project is a collaboration between Nefit Bosch, Essent, technology group Firan, and engineering firm Witteveen+Bos. Renewable hydrogen produced by Lhyfe will be used to test hydrogen boilers at the Deventer testing site.
German multinational engineering and technology company Bosch, which owns Nefit Bosch, has said it wants to commercialise a hydrogen-ready combi boiler by 2029, reflecting growing interest in hydrogen for the built environment as an alternative to natural gas.
“This collaboration also paves the way for new applications of renewable hydrogen through Nefit Bosch’s development – a very good news [story] that confirms the dynamism of the sector,” added Graré.
Lhyfe’s first plant has been producing renewable hydrogen for over four years. It now operates four other production sites in France and Germany. In the Netherlands, it is also developing a 200MW electrolyser project at Chemical Park Delfzijl, expected online by 2030 with an initial 120MW phase.
