Nutrien shuts down Trinidad nitrogen operations

The closure of the Point Lisas facility is in response to port restrictions imposed by Trinidad and Tobago’s National Energy Corporation and what it termed as “a lack of reliable and economic natural gas supply” that has impacted cashflow.

Nutrien said it would continue to engage with stakeholders over Trinidad operations.

Ammonia and urea sales volumes from Nutrien’s Trinidad operations are approximately 85,000 and 55,000 tonnes per month respectively.

However, the closure will lead to reduced global ammonia supply, potentially impacting regional markets and necessitating supply chain adjustments.

Nutrien expects to be within its 2025 annual nitrogen sales volume guidance range of 10.7 to 11.2 million tonnes due to the strong performance of its North America nitrogen operations, where it operates 12 sites across Canada and the US.

The Caribbean is a major player in the global ammonia market, exporting to North America, Latin America and Europe.

The regional market is also a hub for the energy industry, with potential future growth driven by green ammonia projects for energy storage and export.

The country plans to install 57 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2065, producing 25GW of electricity for green hydrogen production.
