Path2 Hydrogen has acquired a Canadian natural hydrogen company that claims its technology will produce low-carbon hydrogen for less than $0.75/kg. ProtonH2’s ISHG process stimulates natural hydrogen generation in depleted oil reservoirs. The firm has said this unlocks trapped hydrogen and converts mineral reactions underground into a steady supply of fuel. It involves injecting dioxygen (O2) into oil wells which reacts with hydrocarbons to generate high-concentration hydrogen syngas. Syngas can either be sold or separated into hydrogen for sale. However, the process does produce carbon dioxide (CO2).
