Poland coal mines operator Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa (JSW) has launched a research and development project to investigate converting waste methane into hydrogen.
JSW is contributing €20m to the €25.6m EU-supported Meth2gen project.
The research will explore a new method of rock mass methane drainage using directional drilling, which will significantly increase the efficiency of methane capture in mines, including the company’s Budryk mine.
This could make it possible to achieve a methane drainage efficiency in the longwalls of around 70%.
