The first shipment is expected to happen as early as 2028 from AM Green Ammonia’s first one -million-tonne-per-annum plant – currently under construction in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh.
AM Green Ammonia is AM Green’s dedicated platform for producing green ammonia.
The ammonia will be certified as a renewable fuel of non-biological origin, under European rules, and is designed to meet “stringent European compliance standards,” according to Anil Kumar Chalamalasetty, Founder of Greenko Group and AM Green.
“Green ammonia stands out as one of the most promising solutions to decarbonise CO2-intensive production of chemicals, fertiliser and, through green hydrogen, also in refining,” said Michael Lewis, CEO of Uniper.
The fuel offers the lowest CO2 avoidance costs compared with other renewable and low carbon molecules. This is due to a relatively mature production process that does not need carbon-rich feedstock.
India’s mission to decarbonise
Right now India is developing several large-scale green ammonia projects under its National Green Hydrogen Mission. Global firms have partnered with government bodies and global firms to build facilities for low-carbon fuel production.
Hygenco is developing a major green ammonia complex in Tata Steel’s Gopalpur SEZ, partnering with Topsoe for technology.
INOX AP is building a $3bn plant in Maharashtra for 500,000 mtpa of liquid ammonia, a key hydrogen carrier.
In Rajasthan, Jakson Green is developing a state government-supported $2.8bn project to produce green hydrogen and ammonia. L&T and Itochu’s Gujarat joint venture aims to create a 300,000 tonnes-per-year green ammonia project, focusing on maritime fuel bunkering in Singapore.

The partnership with Uniper underpins a strengthening relationship between India and Germany.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz met India Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday and floated the possibility that the EU and India could sign a free trade agreement as early as the end of this month.
He called a partnership between the two countries a “strategic asset” in the face of rising geopolitical and economic challenges.
Part of this involves working with India to reduce its reliance on Russia, according to Merz. India works with Russia on security policy and the country is one of the largest buyers of Russian gas and oil alongside China.
“The MoUs being signed today on all these issues will give new momentum and strength to our cooperation,” Modi said at a joint news conference with Merz.
